Fabulous Film Finds Presents “Quest for Fire”

It's eighty thousand years ago. A group of early humans lose the lightning-created fire they've kept going for years. Lacking knowledge of how to make fire themselves, they set out to find more. Overcoming dangers, they meet a more advanced tribe, who introduce them to the
new ways of their culture. Critic Janet Maslin of the NY Times said the movie is "more than just a hugely enterprising science lesson, although it certainly is that. It's also a touching, funny and suspenseful drama..." (Rated R)

Carol Brown Goldberg: Recent Works

September 20, 2014 - January 4, 2015
Since the late 19th century, artists have often compared the use of design and color with the work of modern musical composers, with each form or hue corresponding to musical phrases and tones. Carol Brown Goldberg carries on this “chromesthetic” tradition in her recent paintings, creating, in the words of one critic, “glorious color-saturated paintings that make us feel heavenly.”

September 27 - January 4

Alexander Calder invented a form of sculpture that constantly changed as it moved in space. Based on the open forms of modernist European sculpture, this new kind of three-dimensional art –called kinetic sculpture– was both lyrical and technical. Like dance, in which forms were constantly flowing and changing as they moved in space, this new kind of sculpture was filled with poetic energy. At odds with the heavy carved or cast sculpture of earlier centuries, kinetic sculpture immediately attracted devoted followers and continues to fascinate viewers today.

Eisenstein imagined that cinema could represent “visual thinking” – not just arguments, but the process by which the mind constructs arguments... October is the purest, most cogent example of Eisenstein’s theory and practice of cinema... you can feel the exhilaration – and the touch of madness – of an artist standing on the threshold of what he believes will be a brave new world.” – Richard Pena, Columbia University
